The world we live in is so clouded with distractions and things that are vying for our attention. How often is it that we can actually sit still…No movement. No sound. For many people it gets real uncomfortable real quick and the need to say something arises. Today’s word challenges us to sit still and listen for the voice of God.
So many people miss God because they are looking for something huge when actually God is operating in the simple minute things that if you are not in tune with the Holy Spirit, you will miss. We are going to examine a passage of scripture in 1 Kings that talks about an encounter the Prophet Elijah had with God.
1 Kings 19:11-17
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.
Now lets examine this passage in depth. Elijah had just killed 450 prophets of Baal and Jezebel had put out a hit on him. Further back in 1 Kings 18, it tells of the many great works Elijah had done such as calling fire from heaven, declaring a drought then calling the rain to come forward, kept a widows pantry stocked with food and the list can go on…This same Elijah was now scared of one woman who had said that he would die in the same manner he had killed the prophets, when he had wrought the works of God with his very hands….
How many times have we seen God work so mightily in and through us but something so minute as a threat from a Jezebel that has no power will send us scurrying, tucking our tail between our legs running for cover? Elijah was running and hiding in a cave!!! When the word of the Lord came to Elijah and asked him what he was doing there in verse 10 he said that I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me. WOW!!! Talk about spiritual amnesia!
Sometimes our soul has so much turmoil that it obstructs our ability to hear soundly or see clearly what God is doing or what he is trying to say to us. In verse11 Elijah was instructed to go out and stand on the mountain. The Lord passed by causing a great wind to come by and tear the rocks off the mountains. But the Lord wasn’t in the wind. Then a great earthquake, then a fire but the Lord wasn’t in either of those. Then a “still small voice.” You see God doesn’t have to yell, scream, rant or rave. It is a still small voice that has the power to halt the storms in your life and quiet your fears and give you direction. It was that still small voice that gave Elijah his next course of direction and calmed his fears.
God speaks to everyone differently. For me sometimes he speaks in an audible voice. Other times, he speaks to me through a devotional I am reading that causes me to seek Him for clarity through His word. Some of us he has to cause earthquakes and fires and dramatic things to happen in our lives to get us to seek Him or sit still long enough to hear his voice. But you can’t hear His voice if you are not in tune with the Holy Spirit.
I encourage you today to take time to declutter your mind and quiet your soul from the things of this world so you can hear that still small voice. In that voice is God’s peace, wisdom and direction to set you back on the right course for your destiny.
